A New Zealand winemaker has won a global environment award for its sustainable practices.

Marlborough-based Yealands Estate was named Most Sustainable Medium Business during the announcement of the International Green Awards in London on Tuesday.

Having already been recognised in 2012 by the International Wine Challenge for producing the world's best sauvignon blanc, Green Awards judges on Tuesday cited Yealands' storm water irrigation system, solar power and insulation, and introduction of sheep for weed and grass management, before naming it a category winner.

"Whilst the pursuit of sustainability has no end point, it is nice to recognise those that have embraced these ideals and contributed greatly to the development of quality products without compromise to our environment," the estate's Peter Yealands said in a statement.
