Consumer New Zealand says householders are throwing away millions of dollars by not shopping around for cheaper energy providers.

The Electricity Authority's found average households could have saved $150-dollars last year by switching retailers - saving $240-million nationwide.

Consumer NZ chief executive, Sue Chetwin, says a new 'What's My Number' website's been set up to make it easier for people to estimate potential savings.

Sue Chetwin says a large family in Christchurch could save over $900-dollars a year while a medium sized household in Wellington could save as much as $500-dollars.

If the power companies have a drop in income we will find that they dream up an excuse to charge more to protect there proffits. Remember the lake water shortages and the price rises to cover the expensive alternative generation methods. Can any one remember the the date it rained and the prices came down again. We can probably all remember the rain but what about the price dropp.

Not to mention all the extra charges they pile on top of an overdue account - Trustpower is one of the worst.

We started throwing away money the moment we allowed Act and the far right to privatize these companys It was never about having cheaper power it was about freeing up these power companys so shareholders(the same people who advocated selling them off) could get richer at nzers expense. We got suckered big time and have we held them accountable?, the title should read "nzers are such a easily exploited pathetic passive bunch". Not only has privatization of our power resources lead to more expensive living costs, its resulted in higher production costs and also given people less spending power, none of which have been good for the economy.
