How much attention do you pay to those who scan your groceries and pack your bags at the supermarket each week?

Do you have a favourite you'll queue up for, even if someone else is free?

At the only supermarket on Waiheke Island there is one lady who has captured the hearts of many shoppers. She is New Zealand’s oldest supermarket checkout operator.

I'd much prefer June to serve me any day over some sullen teenager who can barely mumble a greeting. 5 hours a day on her feet - I can hear all the young people whingeing already.

I'd be surprised if Waiheke Island was the kind of place with rampant youth unemployment anyway.

Not to put a damper on this story - but she's 80 years old and already receiving at least the super, which is not income tested so she's adding to her household income and therefore not exactly poor. But is she taking away the opportunity of gainful employment from a young person by staying on, and we have to pay them the dole? There's something wrong in a weird way about this story.
