The death of a man found in his Napier home with head injuries was an accident, say police.

A family member found James David Elliott, 66, dead in his Bluff Hill house on Tuesday, two days after he was last seen alive.

A post-mortem examination indicated Mr Elliott, who lived alone, died from head injuries.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave de Lange said the scene examination, preliminary post mortem results and other inquiries indicated Mr Elliott's death was accidental.

"This will now be referred to the coroner, who will determine the cause of death," says Mr de Lange.
