Amy Adams' private member's bill will force professional fundraisers to disclose how much they make from donations

A National MP is trying to get to the bottom of how much money goes to charities.

Amy Adams has had her private member's bill drawn from ballot to force professional fundraisers to disclose how much they are making from donations.

Parliament will consider clamping down on professional fundraisers skimming off the top of charitable donations.

The Selwyn MP says there are reports of 75 percent commission rates and higher, meaning little of the donations are actually going into the pockets of the charity.

"If you ask someone to make a $20 donation to charity, knowing full well that, in fact, perhaps only $2.50 is for the charity I think that's misleading."

Ms Adams is proposing if the fundraiser's cut is under 20 percent they would not have to reveal the amount they receive.
