The Labour Party says its calculations show the 50,000 Kiwis moving to Australia this year will depart some time today.

Leader David Shearer says more than 170,000 people have left New Zealand for Australia since National took office – and the reason for this is simple.

“We’re not focusing on jobs nearly as much as we should. We can’t have a Government which says ‘hands off, let the market sort this out’, the market is certainly not sorting it out,” party leader David Shearer told Firstline this morning.

He says his party is trying to focus on what is driving New Zealanders overseas and a recent 3 News Reid Research poll showing his party gaining support is a reflection of this work.

“Fifty thousand people for example going to Australia is an indictment of failure and they’re looking to other parties and saying, ‘Labour can do a better job.'’”

Key should have never been put into power end of story!!! All he is doing is looking after his own, the rich and greedy. I have been living abroad for many years, I have been back once and was shocked. Too many people are on the poverty line thanks to him and his government. It only makes good sense for him to ship the long term unemployed abroad to get the stats down. This allows him to brainwash the country into thinking he is doing good in reducing unemployment. Can we trust banks??? Shouldn't it apply to ex bankers who are just on an ego trip!!!

@Jimmy, Key and Bennett are actually paying the unemployed with tax payer funds by giving one way plane tickets via the winz system. What do you think the unemployment figure would actually be if they hadnt been shipping the unemployed offshore?. 9-10 percent?.

Well infact John Key and Paula Bennett are handing over tax payer funds to buy the unemployed a one way ticket out of the country. But why? because it makes the unemployment statistics look better, just imagine the total number of unemployed if we had another 170,000 people registered with Winz. National would be kicked out of power if it wasnt deliberately fundging with the figures.
