National has seen its biggest drop in popularity since the election, but is still polling over 50 percent.

The latest New Zealand Morgan poll showed National fell five points to 51.5 percent, the New Zealand Herald reported.

Labour was up four points to 33 percent.

The Green Party was on 7.5 percent (down 0.5), the Act Party 2 percent (up 0.2), the Maori Party on 2.5 percent (up 1), Progressives on 0.5 percent (unchanged) and United Future below 0.5 percent.

Although not in Parliament, New Zealand First was up 1 percent to 2.5 percent.

The number of people who said the National-led Government was going in the right direction was up two points to 67.5 percent.

Those who said it was going in the wrong direction number was up 2.5 points to 24.5 percent.

The poll questioned 845 voters.

With a population of 4 million and a sample size of 845, the margin of error is 3.3 percent - most polls use 1000, with a margin of 3.1 percent. Also, the margin is smaller at the extremes - the 3.1 percent is at 50 percent, not 3.

a poll of 845 voters??! The margin of error on a poll like this makes the '% point changes' for all parties redundant.

The anti-smacking bill did Labour in and it will do National in as well.

John Key is being honest. The ACT Party is not. A "light" smack will never correct the behavior of any child. It is pathetic that they are trying to win over the voters by pushing the hitting of kids. I won't be an ACT supporter much longer.

It’s all the Tax payer money they are accepting as wages...Opps! Sorry...living allowances! Just a thought....I wonder what they do with their wages if they get their living allowance paid for by the tax payer?

I've got news for you alien. I can understand the law and the basic principles of integrity and honesty - on both counts English has failed. As I said earlier,if he was in the corporate sector, he would be dismissed and likely to be facing the prospect of serving out a lengthy jail sentence. You know that he is hiding behind some sort of parliamentary services bamboo wall which purports to make it legal thus the claim that he is totally different from us mere mortals. What bloody rubbish! Us taxpayers are well able to see it as the rort that it is. Key is on record before the election saying that he would get rid if Bradford's ill conceived legislation. I, and thousands of other National voters intend to hold him accountable to that. Key is a flip flop and English - well he's just got sticky fingers really.

I have not liked National since they have been in power this time - they have shown a lack of principles. However >50% of the poll is still pretty clear - they have the approval of the country.

Neville, sure it isn't voters are too stupid to understand that during the election Key said he would not change the law unless it was shown to not be working, which he still says. So where is the lie? Oh wait there isn't one, just you couldn't comprehend what was a very basic statement that both Labour and National made in the election over this. What theft Neville? He is legally allowed those. please go learn the law and some basics.

John Key has misjudged voters anger over the lie he told about removing Bradford's parental control legislation. The continued theft by Bill English under the guise of 'I don't own it' is just nonsense. In the corporate sector that sort of thing would bring instant dismissal. Key is fortunate that there is not a competent opposition to keep him honest. I think his rubbing shoulders with Graham Henry is also not a good look. Henry is a loser. We expect more from our politicians.
