An inquiry is underway in Palmerston North following the death of a young man on a stolen motorbike

Sun, 20 Dec 2009 1:11p.m.

Police have named the man killed shortly after he sped away from police on a stolen motorcycle in Palmerston North last night.

Martyn Dillon, 22, of Paraparaumu, died after losing control of the motorcycle at the corner of Milson Line and John F Kennedy Drive, near Palmerston North Airport.

His pillion passenger, a woman who was not wearing a helmet, was in a serious but stable condition at Palmerston North Hospital.

Palmerston North police area commander Pat Handcock said police had pulled in behind the motorcycle on a red light on the corner of Ruahine St and Tremaine Ave after seeing it travelling at excessive speeds.

Mr Handcock said police activated their flashing lights to request Mr Dillon to pull over as the traffic light turned green, at which point Mr Dillon "accelerated to high speeds" straight through the intersection into Milson Line.

"It appears that the police patrol lost contact with the motorcyclist almost immediately due to the heavy acceleration of the motorcycle."

He said it appeared police attempts to stop the motorcycle were "momentary".

Mr Handcock said the motorcycle had been stolen.

Police spokeswoman Kim Perks said the crash happened about 500m from where the motorcycle accelerated away.

The case has been referred to the Independent Police Conduct Authority.

All you d**kheads that are bad mouthing my little brother had best know the facts before you run your mouths off.
fact 1: that bike wos not stolen
Fact 2: he has a family that love him and miss him alot

And i can gaurantee that there is NOT one person alive who has not f**ked up and done something stupid.

Think about his family who are still grieving before you write down anything.

Oh well what can ya say apart from another brainless idiot out of the gene pool, i agree he made his choices and so did his pinion passenger and that's what happens when you get a novice playing with power he obviously could not handle. People like this guy annoy me because if he had survived then we would be paying for his rehabilitation out of the ACC funds pool. you know that one all us LAW ABIDING motorcyclists are being forced to contribute more of our hard earned tax payers dollars towards.

You reap what you sow. If he hadn't stolen the motorbike and tried to speed away from police he wouldn't have died. Too many young people don't think about the possible consequences of their actions.

Re Not Funny,

"how could you think that this is funny? someone died for goodness sake!"

Yes your absolutly right, someone died, Do i think its funny, well maybe not, am i surprised, hell no.

He chose to run. He chose to ride a stolen motorbike. he chose to basicly thumb is nose at the police. he chose to use excess speed in a built up area. he chose to allow his passenger to not where a helmet. so dear god, he chose to die. what "Not Funny" should do if there able to is take a look at where he went to do himself in, and if your unable to i will explain.................

down milson line, over (Not round) the roundabout, meanwhile collecting a concreate embedded pole before continuing across the intersection and into a small powerbox before completing the trick of hitting a rather tall fence. but its ok, there are solutions, we could build a rubber padded barrier around the roundabout, and then ask the powerboard to remove the powerbox along with asking the fence owners if they would remove there fence and replace it with a shrub, yep that will fix it, then the poor soul would not have died, (But on reflection, just STOPPING the bloody motorbike with the brakes the manfacture put on them would only mean some PD maybe and a fine) he chose his destiny or in this case distruction, i wont be needing tissues sorry
