Firefighters are tonight battling a 10ha fire on the edge of Waimate Forest in South Canterbury.

Fire services were called to the blaze about 4.20pm, and four rural fire units as well as two helicopters were working to control it, southern fire communications shift manager Brian Sharpe said.
