A refugee family from Bhutan say they have been driven out of their state house by neighbours from hell.

They claim their neighbours have abused them, urinated on their lawns and thrown dog food at their house, but Housing New Zealand says it can't help as it has got nowhere else to put them.

The family came to New Zealand 18 months ago, but what they hoped would be the start of a new life has turned into a nightmare.

"They come up to our gate and write very bad words," says Girdhari Kadariya, "like, 'f… you migrant', and they write something bad, and when we ask their parents why they are doing so, they simply say, 'Oh they are children.'"

Mr Kadariya says the neighbours' children would throw dog food at their house and water bombs at the children.

"When they go out they will put meat in their pocket and come and urinate in the ground."

But one of the children's mothers disputes the allegations.

"No use being scared, they've just made up a whole lot of lies," says Rochaine Eyles. "They've made up a whole lot of lies and they don't need to be scared of nothing. The only problem they're scared of is little kids."

But she does admit to having a problem with her neighbours.

"In my eyes they're just getting to pick and choose where they want to live, and we've got Kiwis out there on this big waiting list for Housing New Zealand, like myself, and I can't get nowhere 'cause they're taking all these homes, and if they don't fit with the neighbours, they want out, then we gotta wait longer."

Despite continuing to pay rent to Housing New Zealand, Mr Kadariya and his family say they have been forced to live in his parents' one bedroom flat because they have been given no other options.

Housing New Zealand says they do not do short term housing.

"If we have tenants or applicants who do need crisis housing, we often can assist with that, but it's a long-term housing solution, it's not emergency short-term housing," says Sarah Hill.

The Kadariyas fled their home three weeks ago. All they want now is a new home to finally start their new lives.

The real issue here is long term no hoper state tenants, they are the problem. Yes, that's right, you people, New Zealanders, (whatever colour, who cares - you're all the same) who make me ashamed to be associated with, who won't get off your butts and blame everyone else and expect everyone else to solve your problems. Here's the solution, get some skills, stop blaming others and get out of this 'whaddaboutme' rut, try working and pay some tax, THAT'S how you get off the frigging HNZ waiting list! How can you blame refugees, yet fail to realise that there's a long waiting list because bludgers like yourselves have been here since year dot sponging off the rest of us and make NO effort to improve your lives!?? I feel sorry for those people from Nepal, they haven't had a chance to contribute to society yet, give them a go. The rest of you bludgers need to be cut off and its great refugees who actually might make something of themselves are getting the houses. You've been riding the state far too long and are killing our country. Yes, KILLING our country.

The Truth hurts! doesnt it? This country isnt as squeaky clean as people make out to be. Yes! its our Government's fault for not looking after the people of this land. So this is the blacklash refugee's are going to get from neighbours like these one's because they are the one's who are being left out. Like the woman in the interview said she is on waiting list for a house. There are alot more Kiwi families like her on a waiting list. Burt G I didnt say NZ was the most racist country in the world. You should read my post as I said there is racism everywhere around the world. I know the Australians are having the same problems over there and feel the same way. So Keeran painful to read but the truth.

It is painful to read this. Janeen dont write such horrible comments. It is the mistake of your government if they have not looked after thier original settlers. Why are you throwing your rubbish on someone when your govt. should be responsible for this.Try to be humane.

Welcome to NZ, the most racist country in the world,

Wake up to the real world, there is racism everywhere. You are a burden to the NZ tax payer, you are getting put first before the people of this land. How do you think they feel, to see you people coming here, getting everything done and they get put to the side. What do you expect to have a welcoming party? And dont believe all this about NZ is this and that! We have the same problems like every other country, their is the good, bad and the ugly here. I'm sick of how they say how wonderful this country is when the real truth we are no better then any other country. NZ Housing fault, to throw a refugee family in the middle of a gang area. Did you think everything was going to smell of roses. There are people who want to live here and have skills and New Zealand Immigration turns them away. Look at this family, how many children have they got? the tax payer will be paying for this family for many years to come. As I said the Government only take you all in because it looks good for the world to see. Why dont all these good people who want you here, take you into their own homes then you wont be a burden to the tax payer and there will be housing for the people of this land.

Going through the article i felt a pain in my heart as my own pain because i am among these refugees in Nepal. I felt hw is NZ what people call best to live in the world. Hw r the people in NZ what people call with best hospitability and civilization.I understood people in NZ do the worst thing in human history to the poor and misarablr.Attention to govt, these are innocent refugees came there hoping new life. They did not have idea that they would be so burden for NZ.I think its a matter of concern for all agencies and government who are responsible for resettlement of refugees.

I hope there are still good folks in NZ who can say NO to such a panic racist neighbour.
Pray for the better for my fellow refugee.

News Flash, do you really think the whole truth has been told about this issue and that New Zealand Immigration here is only the ones who reissue visas as the applications are aproved overseas and not from the offices here in New Zealand and that is why we have so many refugees at our doorstep taking your money and have no skills or speak propper English. But you people don't complain about that, just shed tears as your tax money goes to over pack a housing project that should be helping the people of our country first. You are more than willing to steal Maori land and seabeds for profit and to strip for housing and yet leave Maori living in the bush. Yes! thats right, there are Maori families living in the bush up the far North. If you didnt know that, then you have your eyes shut with this Government too. The Government rather spend tax payers money on refugee's to make them look good for the world to see. Now they complain because Maori are making a stand, what did they expect to happen. NZ Housing should be housing the people of the land first before refugees and immigrants.

Sad to see that refugees feel that they are not wanted in NZ. Housing New Zealand are to blame for this. Why? Because they are the landlord. They are there to provide housing but also a quality of life for the tenant. What should have happened was mediation with both parties and then if need be allow the tenancy tribunal to act upon any complaints. If children are abusing and harassing others then there is definitely a need for better parenting. Why? Because they end up doing the same as they turn into adults. Ian: Your comment regarding the Iwi that 'Rochaine' comes from. I still have yet to understand where that question had come from. Please don't regard this as a "Maori vs Everyone else" saga - because it's not. Are Kiwi's annoyed that there are immigrants and refugees getting Housing New Zealand homes whilst they have been on the waiting lists for years - then yes, I agree that we should be looking out for our own. However, there are plenty of private homes to rent and with the accommodation supplement that is awarded by the government to ease that strain in households there is no excuse, no reason for one not to be able to have a home. Housing New Zealand homes are for the needy and the poor - not for the earner. Therefore, a better solution would be to encourage those who are in the waiting list to look for employment or skills to be better employed, so that the homes are going to the right people! Well that's my 5 cents worth :)

Yes! All these Refugees and other Immigrants get the Houses while the Kiwi is on a waiting list and that is a known fact. I've known a few Kiwi families on a waiting list while you see all these Refugee's and other Immigrants get let into our country getting houses, money, cars and furniture from the tax payer once again. Stop letting these refugees in NZ and look after our own first. We are sick of all them moving here and you can see trouble is growing.
