Niwa climate scientists say this January could be the coldest on record for most of the country if current trends continue.
An El Nino weather pattern has resulted in chilly weather and rain for most of the country, except Auckland and Northland, and the cool weather is not expected to let up.
Scientists say temperatures are around two to three degrees below normal in most areas.
