Japanese whalers and anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd are each pointing the finger at the other after their boats collided at sea yesterday, the second collision between the pair's boats in just over a month.

In a statement yesterday, Sea Shepherd said its vessel Bob Barker was "intentionally" rammed by Japanese harpoon ship Yushin Maru 3 in Australian Antarctic Territory at 4:09pm (NZT), about 290km off Cape Darnley.

Watch footage of the collision, shot by Sea Shepherd crew aboard the Bob Barker.

Today, Japan's Institute of Cetacean Research (ICR) said Sea Shepherd had rammed the Yushin Maru 3 before activists from the group had hurled projectiles containing butyric acid, or rancid butter, at another of its fleet, the Shonan Maru 2.

ICR said the Bob Barker had been approaching its "whale research mother ship" Nisshin Maru and the Yushin Maru 3 had been manoeuvred to prevent the boats coming into contact.

The Bob Barker then rammed the Yushin Maru 3, which suffered minor damage to its handrail and hull, ICR said.

Sea Shepherd said yesterday the Yushin Maru 3 "intentionally" rammed the Bob Barker, creating a metre-long deep gash in the ship's mid starboard side above the waterline and endangering the lives of crew.

"Four harpoon ships, the Yushin Maru 1, 2, and 3 and Shonan Maru 2, were circling and making near passes to the stern and bow of the Bob Barker," Sea Shepherd said.

The group quoted Paul Watson, skipper of the Steve Irwin, currently en route to join the action, as saying the whalers got away scot-free with the "outrageous" sinking of the Ady Gil last month, after that ship and the Shonan Maru 2 collided..

"They appear to have no qualms about endangering Sea Shepherd crew. What we really need is for the governments of Australia and New Zealand to step up and start enforcing maritime laws in these waters, or who know what the whalers will do next. Australian and New Zealand lives are at risk every day in these waters."

is it just me or is watson purposely trying to endanger himself and others? because its not the whaling thats driving the sea sheperd to do these things, its themselves. Everyone has a choice and its their decision whether or not to do stupud things in the middle of the ocean or whether to negotiate and talk about it like a mature adult.

I did a Level 1 NCEA Research project on the anti-whaling campaign and I honestly think the Japanese are at fault here. The Sea Shepherds are trying to protect the whales and animals have just as much right to be protected as humans do. Whales should not have to die just because the Japanese want to do tests on them and then chop them up and send them away to markets to sell for millions. The only reason the Sea Shepherds are resorting to such interaction is because Australia and other countries are too scared to stand up because Japan is such a valuable ally to have (according to them). We as a nation should be doing something because at this rate we are driving the sea life to extinction and the extinction of the human race. Yes, those who eat meat do encourage animal slaughter in a way, but we don't need to go to the extent of eating every living thing on this planet. Animals such as Gorillas, Whales, Seals, all these animals are not necessary to us. They are animals who are peaceful and friendly, people are just choosing to kill them simply because of greed and selfishness. We should be banning commercial whaling whether it is for research or profit. If research is required then they should not be killed.

I think those guys (Sea Shepards) are self appointed gaurdians of the whales. Some of the crew seem to like getting "rammed" in a number of ways. No one seems to note the fact that what they are committing is piracy/violence. Remember when that Vegan sissy captain faked getting shot by the japs?
These guys make a living being agitators. The law needs to go after the people who donate money to them for aiding and abbetting piracy. They could indict Bob Barker, The Red Hot Chili Peppers if they really did give them money and they knew it was fpr piracy. Pretty hard to deny knowing or having watched on TV thier antics.
Another way to stop this ongoing pirate show is to call in question the captain's papers. If he is committing unsafe acts at sea, then he may be called to task by the maritime authorities. He and the crew may be able to be taken into lawful custody by the Japanese whaling crews. Then to Japan for a trial and subsequent imprisonment. (they have a real strict prison system too!) Some of the crew might enjoy getting "rammed" in he prison as well.
There, that should do it!

Bit hard to tell really. It's likely that they rammed the Bob Barker on purpose but if someone came up and was going to punch my friend in the face I'd probably stop him before he could aswell.(Me being the yushin maru 3 and my friend, the Nisshin maru)

Though I do think we can be sure that that last comment was a bit, well, dumb" What we really need is the governments of Australia and New Zealand.... Australian and New Zealand lives are at risk every day in these waters."
I haven't heard of any ships other than anti-whaling vessels colliding with the whaling ships so, as I see it, if they weren't there nobody would be in any danger.
If this guy wants people to join his cause he should try to sound less like a whiney child trying desperately to blame others when he made a mistake.
In saying that though, I remain on the fence as far as the whole whaling episode goes. I myself will never eat whale but I'm not going to spit the dummy if I see my neighbours doing so.

Robert M,

Why did you keep repeating a Japanese female name "Saki" through your comment? if your going to make semi-racist comments at least getting the spelling right.

In essence the government dosen't have a foreign policy, it has a trade at all price policy.Unless pushed this NZ government will never mount effective diplomatic, legal or patrol action against the illegal Japanese whalers and a Japanese Government which general policy to rape the worlds ocean at will be it whales, tuna or patagonian toothfish. One can imagine the diplomatic chat that will result from this act of violence on the high seas by a Japanese security ship. It will be timid even by the standards of Neville Chamberlain and Joseph Kennedy. 'More saki mates'. 'Those idiot hippie protesters'. 'More saki'-'we New Zealand diplomats apologise profoundly for annoyance of those interferrying busybodies'. 'The Ishun Maru should have chopped the Bob Barker in half'. 'We would never have complained'.'We won't take legal action and we'll go everything to stop that green dope smoker Garret and those cougars Bishop and Gillard. God they need a bit of whalebone'. 'You have nothing to fear from our boys in blue. Judith got them well trained and their mainly devoted to watching prono and rodgering each other with big batons. To tell you the truth the polices sentiments were much more to send the Te Kaha to arrest Sea Shepperd and try them for piracy'. 'More saki. What a party were having. All my friends are here. More Saki.' Apologies to Tim and Murray.

The best thing would be for Sea Shepherd and Paul Watson to be sent to the bottom for there dangerous games. If they didnt want to be rammed they wouldnt be there. No matter what they say Sea Shepard is breaking the law of the sea by putting there boat in a dangerous situation wothout need.

Here's a thought to ponder. Sea Shepherd only act stupid in the Antarctic where there are no Navy Vessels or "Policemen" to stop them. according to a Wikipaedia "Whale Meat" article - the Norwegians and Icelanders still have commercial whaling and pull almost as many Whales from the sea as do the Japanese. Also not for scientific research but food. Why do Sea Shepherd not act in this manner in the waters of the North Sea and Arctic Oceans from where Norway and Iceland get their whales from????. Could it be that in those waters those two countries have Navies and warships that would take a "Somewhat" dim view of Sea Shepherd interfering with their rights to sail the seas and hunt.?? Or is it just covert racism against the Japanese by Watson and his motley bunch of thugs??

Sorry, in the video I see the whaler making a slight turn to starboard to INCREASE the distance between vessels as is the correct procedure for safety. Sea shepherd, don't complain when YOU create a dangerous situation and it goes wrong. From past actions of your group you have little credability remaining. Go home.

Get out of there Sea Shepherd, we are tired of you giving our country a bad name. If you have a death wish why not just jump off a bridge without the hurting anyone else.
