The winner of a $1 million home, put up for a church raffle by a couple in Cambridge, has been announced today.

Around 48,000 people worldwide entered to win the Waikato home of Murray and Michelle Smith on Lake Karapiro.

The winner, Warwick Hutchinson, said it was a great shock.

While the prospect of public attention made him uncomfortable, Mr Hutchinson said he was thrilled and overwhelmed.

In a statement, Mr Hutchinson said he was grateful to receive the home at “a most strategic time” in his life.

“I sincerely wish Bridges Church and the Smiths the very best in their endeavours as they move forward with their project.”

The Smiths’ five-bedroom home was valued at over $1 million, boasting lake views and incorporating two self-contained guest units.

Mr Hutchinson did not yet know his plans for the property.

The promotion asked people to buy a set of six Waipa District photographs for $25. Each set gave its purchaser one chance to win the property.

The Smiths have six children, and said they planned to give all the money, minus campaign expenses, to Bridges Church – where Mr Smith is a pastor.

The couple raised $1,226,422 in less than three months. The money will go toward the construction of a new church and community centre.

What ever Brien you idiot, did you buy some photos and not win aye, so you thought you'd have your say, do you feel better after your whinge?

Perfect example of how to circumvent the petty bureaucrats. Had the Smiths been able to raffle the house directly rather than through the subterfuge of selling photographs the exchequer would have got something for our coffers, but they instead shot themselves - and us too - in the foot.
