Heavy rain and snow has fallen across much of the country closing several major roads and causing disruption for motorists.

A decent dump of heavy snow fell in Dunedin’s hill suburbs overnight.

Grit trucks were busy early this morning clearing the Northern Motorway to keep State Highway One open.

And it created the usual difficulties for commuters trying to get down from the hills to work and school.

Forecasters say the weather should start to clear today and the rain and snow should ease to showers overnight.
