The last days of winter will be dominated by drier and milder weather in the east

The last days of winter will be dominated by westerly winds, with cloudier and wetter weather in the west and drier, milder, weather in the east.

The good news is, the first days of spring could be fine, WeatherWatch.co.nz says.

There would also be a continuation of mild weather over the North Island but the next low pressure system should cross the country about next Wednesday, bringing a period of north to northeast winds and heavy rain, it said.

However, some long-range models were showing a large high pressure system coming from Australia to kick off the first official day of spring on September 1.
