Robert Joseph Cummings has admitted distracting staff, while another man stole charity donation boxes - some of them in the shape of guide dogs - all over Christchurch.

The 40-year-old invalid beneficiary pleaded guilty in Christchurch District court today to stealing eight donation boxes and receiving three stolen motor mowers, which he pawned.

His alleged co-offender has not yet pleaded.

Cummings admitted stealing donation containers from shops, service stations, taverns, and liquor stores.

Police said he admitted distracting staff each time the thefts took place.

Judge David Holderness remanded Cummings in custody to October 15 for a pre-sentence report, which will consider his suitability for home detention.

There was no application for bail.
