The Greens have gained a seat

National has lost a seat and the Greens have gained one in the final election results released on Saturday.

National now has 59 seats but still has the numbers to govern in the 121-seat parliament with the support of two votes from ACT and United Future.

The numbers have changed after 263,469 special votes cast on November 26, which weren't included in the election night results, were counted.

The results mean Aaron Gilmore, who was a National MP in the last term, loses his spot in parliament, while the Greens gain a 14th seat, to be taken by Mojo Mathers.

She is the first deaf MP in New Zealand.

Labour's Carmel Sepuloni has won the Waitakere seat by just 11 votes, taking the electorate off cabinet minister Paula Bennett, who held a majority of 349 votes on election night.

Christchurch Central has also changed hands, with National's Nicky Wagner beating Labour's Brendon Burns by 45 votes.

The two were deadlocked on 10,493 votes each in the election night results.

Mr Burns will not return to parliament because he has a low list ranking.

All other electorate candidates who lead on election night have been confirmed as winning their seats.

A total of 2,257,336 votes were cast, with voter turnout at 74.21 per cent, down from 79.46 per cent in 2008.

The narrow wins in Christchurch Central and Waitakere are likely to prompt appeals by the losing candidates.

How the seats fall:

* National 59

* Labour 34

* Green Party 14

* New Zealand First 8

* Maori Party 3

* Mana 1

* ACT 1

* United Future 1

Real cool to see the first ever deaf MP, Carmel Sepuloni, get in. It will be interesting to see how parliament has to adapt to ensure Carmel can fully participate, and may mean some wins for the wider Deaf community now that Carmel is their to raise awareness. Signing in parliament on TV perhaps? Go Carmel !!!!

This does not change much, the Maori party will sellout to National foreshore. I would be very surprised if National cant do what they want with all their major policies, in other words sellassets to foriegners, privatise everything and basically follow the failed American system.
