A plant-based dishwasher powder advertised as an environmentally friendly alternative has been recalled after it was deemed hazardous and highly corrosive.
Consumer New Zealand says the Earthwise product, which claims to be "naturally powerful", fails to comply with safety standards for hazardous substances as it has a high pH level which means it could cause severe burns if eaten.
The product has since been removed from shop shelves, with a public recall taking effect on Thursday and Earthwise is offering a refund to customers.
"Earthwise told us it's now changed its blending method and said it was confident there would be no recurrence of the issue," Consumer NZ spokeswoman Sue Chetwin said.
"Companies making green claims need to ensure any claims are accurate, unambiguous and verifiable, otherwise they shouldn't be making them."
Consumer NZ tested 19 dishwasher powders in August and only the Earthwise product recorded a pH level higher than 12.5 which is the national standard.
