A naval vessel has run aground off the coast of Tutukaka in Northland.

The Rescue Coordination Centre says the launch VIP issued a mayday call about 7am after it began taking on water.

Three people were understood to be on board the vessel, returning from Waitangi, but there were no injuries.

The vessel was towing a smaller craft at the time of the crash.

The HMNZS Manawanui was due to arrive at the scene around 9am to assist.

If the navy can crash a small sea vessel into rocks, then the Rena accident looks plausible as both would of had access to maps, sonar etc. The navy are recruiting at the moment, maybe people with boat and map skills are needed. In saying that I think the armed services do a fantastic job and this is just a minor hiccup, no one is 100% perfect. Imagine the ribbing this crew are going to get.
