Eleven of the Navy's ships arrived in Wellington today

By Frances Cook

The entire New Zealand Navy fleet, bar one ship, made its way into Wellington harbour today, marking the beginning of the Navy’s 70th anniversary celebrations.

Eleven ships came together before the celebrations this weekend, which will include opportunities for members of the public to tour the ships and watch official ceremonies.

As part of the celebrations, a 21 gun salute was fired from the HMNZS Te Mana at 9:45 this morning.

While it is unusual for a large group of Navy ships to be in the same place, the ships have been travelling together since the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The crew took advantage of the ‘fleet concentration’ to practice manoeuvres in a multi-ship environment.

On October 3 the ships will go their separate ways for operations and exercises in the Solomon Islands, South East Asia, and around New Zealand’s coast.

Dan I suggest you have a proper look at fleet numbers around the world............ you might find NZ is in the top 20 of actual ships that are seaworthy. Don't just compare to the big ones off the top of you head US,RN,PLA(N) ect you might find NZ has a bigger fleet than some country's that you would be shocked at. example IRELAND similar size EEZ and only 5 ships with about 5.1 million people. And nothing nearly as capable as the Frigates

Just because the navy is small doesn't mean it is pathetic, Our Army is small yet we have some of the best trained soldiers in the world. Anyway the navy is relative to the size of our defence force as a whole, why would we have an armada of ships that we don't have the means to crew, which would then fall into disrepair and deem our navy operationally ineffective? Our navy has been called on or participated in humanitarian aid within the South Pacific many many times, a job it steps up to do effectivley with a modern fleet.

Small doesn't equate to pathetic. If that logic held true, then in the global context, NZ is pathetic. NZ's Navy is a Navy from a small nation, and it happens to be the best small-nation navy in the world. What is pathetic is small-minded Kiwis who are ignorant of the incredible sacrifice that NZ's sailors make, at sea and ashore, in peace and in conflict, advancing the country's all over the world.

What a joke, you call that a fleet? Our "Navy" is little more than a fishing operation. the mere fact that we can dock our entire "navy" in Wellington shows how pathetic our defences really are.

Our Navy personal do alot for our country, people dont see how much it actually is. Some put there lives on the line and they were a big help when the earthquake hit Christchurch. The badly hit areas wouldnt have had food and water if we didnt have them and shops would have been broken into if they hadnt had their road blocks and patrolling out. My husband is in the navy and I am very proud of what he does and will continue doing for his family and our country.

I'm proud of the professionalism of our sailors and disappointed that some people cannot see the high value the RNZN supply to the NZ and wider South Pacific communities. People who sneer at defence capabilities lack the imagination to see the importance of humanitarian aid and disaster relief supplied by our navy, but would be the first to squeal if a serious threat came across the ocean and we were unprepared because we didn't pull our weight in our defence alliances.
