At least four Christchurch residents have been told to leave their homes immediately because they are at risk from a nearby building collapsing.

Engineering checks on The Terrace on the Park apartment complex have revealed it suffered massive damage in the December 23 quakes.

Bridget O'Sullivan could not believe what she found when she got home from work last night – a red-sticker plastered on her front gate.

“[It was] a bit of a shock; no phone call or anything like that,” says Ms O’Sullivan. “So we got told to pack our bags for potentially four to six weeks.”

The multi-storey apartment next door suffered damage in February and forced her to leave for three months.

Since moving back in, she had not given it a second thought.

“It is scary. I’ve been sleeping soundly at night under the eves of something dangerous,” she says.

As a result CERA demolitions boss Warwick Isaacs says the buildings will be brought down under urgency.

The apartments have been vacant for some time.
