New Zealand Post launches first 3D stamp for Rugby World Cup

New Zealand Post is about to release its first three dimensional stamp.

Like so many other companies, it's cashing in on all the hype surrounding the Rugby World Cup.

While it's 25 times the price of a regular stamp, it's still one of the most affordable souvenirs of the competition.

But New Zealand Post's version of the coveted Webb Ellis Cup is much more portable than the real thing.

And the company's confident its first 3D initiative will be just as popular.

“It's a special cup and it's a special event and we wanted to reflect that with a special stamp. The stamps cost $15 each and were created in Auckland,” says Simon Allison, sales and marketing manager for New Zealand Post.

The illusion of depth comes from photographs of the real trophy being taken from every angle then spliced together.

Despite being almost twice the size of a regular stamp, they can be used throughout the postal service like a normal stamp, if you're willing to pay for it... and part with it.

For $15 you can send a 300 gram parcel anywhere in the world or a 5kg parcel within New Zealand.

“Fifteen dollars is great value for a souvenir of the Rugby World Cup,” says Mr Allison.

A limited run of fewer than 100,000 stamps will be available from tomorrow in Post Shops around the country.

“Whether New Zealand wins or another country wins at least people can purchase this product and have the cup for themselves.”

Let's hope this won't be the only reminder of the Webb Ellis Cup that New Zealand's left with at the end of the tournament.

The illusion of depth is achieved with holograms? or how it works?

A bit of a correction is due. The first 3D NZ stamp was issued 20 July, 1994, commemorating the 25th Anniversary of the man on the moon. Perhaps what they meant to say was that this it the first 3D stamp commemorating the Rugby World Cup, not the first NZ 3D stamp regardless of what it is commemorating, which is what is being implied with the current promotion.
