A New Zealand family has been expelled from Morocco, with authorities saying their Christian values were no longer acceptable.

Chris and Tina Broadbent, along with their two children, were issued with deportation orders yesterday and told to leave immediately.

Listen to the full phone interview with Chris Broadbent.

The couple had been working for the last year and a half at a Christian orphanage of 33 children in the Middle Atlas Mountains. Officials in Morocco have accused staff at the orphanage of trying to teach Christianity to the orphans in their care. Twenty other international staff members were also told to leave.

Some were physically escorted to the airport, but the Broadbent family made the decision to drive themselves to Tanger and catch a ferry across to Spain. They were given just one hour to pack their belongings and make their way to the port.

Mr Broadbent says the couple hold grave fears for the wellbeing of the orphans they have left behind.

"There's 33 children who have been torn off their foster parents and who knows when they'll see them again, what care or institution they'll be put into next," he says.

"Really we're just gutted for the kids."

He told 3 News he wants the world to know about the plight of the children who have now been abandoned as a result of the government's actions.

The New Zealand embassy in Madrid has confirmed to 3 News the family are safe and well in Torremolinos in Spain.

Mr Broadbent says the family is thinking about what to do next and are still confused as to why they were kicked out.

“They didn’t like the way we were doing things – they didn’t like the Christian component of who we are,” says Mr Broadbent.

“We are certainly not missionaries and we’ve never attempted to convert Muslims to Christianity. It’s not what we’re about, it’s not why we’re here.”

He says his family will eventually come back to New Zealand, and they have made no request for consular help.

According to the moroccan authorities, this is more of a "proselytism" which is against the moroccan law than anything else. The President of The Evangelical Church of Morocco, Pastor Jean-Luc Blanc seems to agree with the this decision according to the french website below (try to translate in english) Article: http://www.la-croix.com/afp.static/pages/100311165102.njr8wxsg.htm Other useful websites of Churches in morocco: http://www.RabatChurch.org/ http://www.CasablancaChurch.org/ I can just say, Peace to the world from a moroccan muslim!

I think, the same thing would most likely happen if there was a Muslim group in NZ targeting 10 years old orphans with an effort to convert them away from Christianity? Would the Church budge or allow it to happen? (forget the local government) This article only shows one side of the story. There are plenty of other non-Muslim families still in morocco and they practice their faith with honor and dignity. Relative to other Arab countries, there's historically a great deal of religious tolerance in Morocco (Moorish History of Spain is a testament of the cross-fertilization life Muslims had with the Christians & Jews before the inquisition began..). Today, you find Churches & Synagogues in nearly every city in Morocco. Christians and Jews practice their faith with honor and dignity on Moroccan soil. I bet you'll find more synagogues in morocco than in Spain, I still wonder why..

Why are these people allowed to deport our people but when they come here they want to practice all their own beliefs and we let them.May we should be like them and tell the immigrant to live like us or go home. How many times do we have to always give in to other countries and let them do what they like here. These poor children and babies have no idea what all the trouble is over they just want to be happy. There are many sick sick minded adults out there .

The Word of the Lord clearly says we will be hated by all men because of our faith in the Lord Jesus and that we should not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear HIM who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell (Matt.10:28)

True Dave, but you also need to understand their Law,both religious and national. In some Muslim countrys its legal to put to death any family member who converts to Christianity,in fact any Muslim who coverts to Christianity is under threat of death. You see its a matter of Law Verses Grace, only a Christian Lives within the rule of grace (Christs death)gave us this... our laws are based on the biblical teachings...to a Muslim this is like a red rag to a bull.M

Try expelling a family in NZ on religious grounds and see what happens. We take so many of our freedoms for granted in this country.
