Air travel restrictions on services to and from Japan have been almost totally eliminated under a new agreement.

Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee says New Zealand airlines now have unlimited access to airports outside the Tokyo region, and nearly all the restrictions on Japanese airlines flying to New Zealand have been removed.

Restrictions on New Zealand airlines using Tokyo's Narita Airport, which has limited capacity, will be removed in 2013.
