New cellphone network set to launch

New Zealand's third cellphone network, Two Degrees, is due to launch in August.

Formerly known as NZ Communications, it's a $250 million partnership between three foreign investors and Maori.

However CEO Mike Reynolds is staying tight-lipped about prices, but will say that New Zealand cellphone users are paying too much, especially when they call someone on another network.

"In general as you look at the value someone gets from their mobile service, that will improve," Mr Reynolds says. "And part of that will be prices."

Mr Reynolds says Two Degrees will reach 97 percent of country by using its own towers in the biggest cities and Vodafone's network in other locations.

Customers will be able to choose a new 022 number, or bring their old number with them.

And it will also need a starting stunt.

"You could put two or three sim cards on to a dolly magazine for example and try and attract communities of users without having to subsidies the handsets," explains IDC telecommunications analyst Rosalie Nelson. "So the cost of subscriber acquisition is actually less."

"We think the room to growth in the market is not so much in the number of people who have phones, but in how they use them," says Mr Reynolds. "Also the traffic that will be covered - voice, text, data, across the board."

The company is also confident that the recent problems with interference from the Telecom XT Network will be sorted out.

The name, Two Degrees, is a twist on the old saying that there are only six degrees of separation between any two people on the planet. And in little old New Zealand, the company says it's more like two degrees.
