A new mobile operator is launching today promising to take on Vodafone and Telecom in the prepay market.

Black + White launched today, promising to help prepay users save on mobile calling without having to sign long-term contracts.

“New Zealanders with prepay mobiles don’t know what rates they pay as they never get a bill. They are paying a lot for the freedom of not having a long-term contract. We’re here to give them a better deal. We are now at war against prepay,” said Black + White CEO Johnathan Eele.

By international standards, New Zealand has a high proportion of prepay mobile users.

“Around 70% of mobile users in New Zealand use prepay. Internationally that figure is more like 40%. Those figures show that Kiwis don’t want to be locked into complicated plans for up to three years – and until now they’ve been paying through the nose for the freedom of not having a mobile account. From today, all that changes,” Mr Eele says.

The new service offered today offered 30-day maximum contracts, 600 free texts a month and a maximum calling rate of 60 cents a minute.

Black + White is promising coverage in 97% of the places New Zealanders live and will provide access to international roaming in over 120 countries.
