Civil Defence teams at the top of the South Island are mobilising to monitor the forecast burst of severe wind and rain.
One hundred millimeters of rain is expected, particularly west of Motueka - and a period of severe gales is expected in Tasman and Nelson tonight - and right through tomorrow.
The Nelson Tasman region has just recovered from last month's landslides and flooding - and District Council spokesman Chris Choat says the monitoring is simply a precaution.
And it is also the end of the golden weather for much of the lower South Island.
MetService has issued a warning for Otago and Southland - saying a depression is expected to deepen rapidly in the eastern Tasman Sea and cross the South Island tomorrow.
The frontal band expected to wrap around the low will bring intense rain - and there could be a brief burst of severe gale force southwest winds early Saturday morning about the south coast from Bluff to the Otago Peninsula.
