As of now, motorists will be able to find out about traffic hold ups on the country's motorways before they get stuck in them.
It's part of a new national system being operated from a state of the art Traffic Management Centre based on Auckland's North Shore.
The new centre should cut the cost of traffic congestion in Auckland alone by about $50 million.
Its other features include traffic light control in the Auckland region, an estimated travel times service and co-ordination centre to enable better collaboration between the traffic agency and emergency services.
The $6 million centre will also provide backup for other cities and manage Wellington's roads at night.
Although the country's traffic jams won't totally disappear, severe build-ups should be reduced.
