A new electronic car will be trialled in New Zealand early next year.
New Zealand will be one of the first countries to host the Mitsubishi Innovative Electric Vehicle (i MiEV).
National and local government representatives will be invited to drive the electric car.
Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand and state-owned energy generator Meridian Energy will evaluate the vehicle for New Zealand conditions, including energy supply and infrastructure.
The i MiEV has a energy efficient electric motor powered by recyclable lithium-ion batteries, it produces no emissions and will be one of the "biggest changes in personal transport since the conception of the motor vehicle", Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand managing director John Leighton said.
"Now there is a real alternative to the petroleum dependent internal combustion engine.
"New Zealand is globally renowned for protecting its environment."
