Many musicians have tried to revive the 1980s. Some have succeeded, but more have failed. But one young New Zealand woman seems to have pulled it off.
Pip Brown, who goes by the name Ladyhawke, has mixed pop with an '80s sound and thrown in a bit of modern electro for good measure.
It is quite an achievement, but what is more remarkable is that she has done it in London.
In so many ways, Pip says she is just a regular small town Kiwi chick. She likes her jeans black, her bass guitar loud, and she rates the '80s as the best musical decade in history.
Her alter-ego Ladyhawke is riding high on the revivalist wave in London. She is on some of Britain's most influential radio playlists, and she has got live gigs all over Europe. At times, it can be a bit overwhelming.
"I'm pretty shy," says Pip. "I can't really deal with audiences very well. I can't look anyone in the eye. I find it really difficult. Yeah, I'm really shy.
"I just play. I find it really hard to speak between songs. You know how people are like, 'and that was a song about blah, blah, blah', I just can't do it and I sometimes have to force myself to say 'Hi, I'm Ladyhawke, thanks for coming."
It has been a few years since she played the snare drum in the Masterton brass band. She now plays not one, not two, but 10 different instruments and she writes all her own material. Pip Miss Multitasker.
"I got told that I was playing at Glastonbury, and I was like, you're kidding! I never thought I'd be part of the audience, let alone playing there.
"I played this festival in Norway and I got off a plane and went straight to Glastonbury. So tired, and then had to do three shows, so it was hectic but it was amazing," she says.
She moved to Sydney two years ago to begin work on Ladyhawke. She took a punt, released a song on the internet and that is when London picked up on it. And now she is less than two months away from releasing her debut album.
Does she think Kiwis will like it?
"I hope so, I hope so. I think about that a lot. So far it seems like people like my music at home. I know my mum will be buying 50 copies."
She is not surprised that her look and sound is compared with Stevie Nicks. She has even been called a blonde, 2008 version of Joan Jett, but she is still very much Pip Brown. It seems you can take the girl away from Masterton, but you will never wrestle Masterton away from Pip Brown.
"I'm pretty keen to not end up as the crazy cat woman down the street, which is kind of what people think is going to happen to me," says Pip.
"I'd like it to not end up like that. I dunno, I've haven't really thought about the future.
"I'd quite like to live back in New Zealand soon. Well not soon, maybe in a year or so, and just be able to have a studio and write music."
