Two of Wellington's African serval cats have been given a novel way to cool off from the heat of summer.
Keepers of Shanti and Tunde have come up with a special feline treat. And while they are not your typical flavoured ice blocks, bloodsicals, mousicals and chicksicals are for the two big cats.
The icy treats are frozen water or blood with a whole mouse or chick on the inside ad on a 27 degree windless Wellington day, you cannot blame the carnivorous cats for wanting to cool down.
Although the cats are African they were born and hand-raised in Wellington, so 27 degrees is about as hot as they have ever experienced.
Today members of the public got to see the cats up close and personal as they dined on their ice blocks and took a quick splash in their paddling pool.
But the big cats could only stand the attention for about 20 minutes before it all became a bit much and they were led back to their enclosure.
The servals are not the only ones to get a mousical treat. The zoo's otters and meerkats also get to indulge in them too.
