A great dane is making a name for himself by having cosmetic surgery. The dog's owners wanted him neutered, but to keep him looking 'manly' where it matters.
When their local vet would not oblige, they came to Auckland's Ponsonby Vet Centre.
Muzza does not know it yet, but he is about to become a doggy pioneer. At one year old, his owner has booked him in for the snip - except it is not as simple as that for dogs.
"In dogs we don't do a simple vasectomy," says veterinarian David McCormack. "We remove the entire testicle - it is a castration."
But for Muzza, all is not lost. He is having cosmetic surgery afterwards to stop him looking saggy.
And when you are talking about a great dane, there is a lot to sag.
The owner, who preferred to keep the camera's focus off him and on the subject, wanted Muzza to look manly.
First the preparation - a careful shave (and you can't be too careful down there), a good clean, then before there is any chance for second thoughts, it is show time.
The accessories are made in the US, where 250,000 have already been sold, but Mr McCormick has never heard of it happening here.
"They're available in a special soft silicone now, if you do want that extra feel," he says.
But Muzza's are the basic model - plastic fantastic. Still, there is a serious side to all of this.
"We strongly feel that castrating or neutering is really important for all pets," says Mr McCormick. "Some people have obstacles to that which may include the look of the area when it's been completed, so we see this as a way to overcome that obstacle."
And after a short lie-down, a shaky Muzza was ready to hang again with the crowd.
