A significant dump of snow is forecast for Canterbury tomorrow, with farmers in the southern hill country warned to expect disruption.

As much as 20cm of snow was expected to fall above 400m between the Waitaki and Rakaia rivers from early tomorrow morning to about midday, with some snow likely down to 300m, MetService forecasters said.

Snow was likely to make travel difficult on South Canterbury roads, and affect farmers with land above 300m.

Persistent rain was also expected.
