The Breakers off-season recruitment drive remains on hold as they await a decision on the make up of the new Australian National Basketball League.

The competition is being revamped after six franchises were dissolved in the past six seasons.

Team ringleaders Kirk Penney and CJ Bruton are confirmed in the Breakers squad but don’t currently have a team to play in.

Breakers coach Andrej Lemanis says it is difficult to sign players until certain issues are decided upon and sorted in the new league.

“Until you know what the league is exactly going to look like - what the salary caps are going to be, what the points cap is going to be - it is kind of hard to go and sign anybody,” he says.

A meeting is being held tonight to resolve some of those issues and a clear format should be in place by the end of next week.

The Breakers semi-final finish last year and reliable financial backing ensures them a spot in the league. Unlike Australian teams from Sydney and Brisbane who were unable to secure the $1 million bank guarantee.

“Our club is in a good position and we’re eager for the details to come out on what the leagues is going to look like, so we can march on and get our plans in place,” Lemanis says.

Before coaching the Breakers in the new season Lemanis will accompany the Austalian national team to the London Olympics after being named assistant coach.

He hopes to bring the knowledge and experience gained at the world competition into the Breakers season.

“I think there is plenty to be learnt in competing against the best in the world and hopefully we can learn something for the Breakers as well, he says”
