A shootout between inebriated rival drug traffickers who disagreed over the winner of a horse race in Guatemala has left at least 17 people dead.

Police say the shootings began at a rodeo near the Mexican border and some of the dead are Mexicans.

Guatemala is a key transit point for South American cocaine being smuggled into Mexico and the United States.
