The 2009 Nuremberg International Toy Fair has opened in Germany.

The show is host to nearly 3000 toy exhibitors displaying the latest innovative toy designs.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel was on hand to mark the opening of the 2009 Nuremberg International Toy Fair on February 4.

Barbie, the iconic toy doll that has become a playmate for girls over decades, is turning 50 years old this year.

A year of celebrations kicked off at the International Toy Fair in Nuremberg, Germany, where a novelty show on Wednesday looked back at Barbie's five decades as a fashion icon.

Barbie was created in March 1959 as the "original teenage fashion model" by Toy-maker Mattel co-founder Ruth Handler, and is today available in 150 countries around the world.

Three dolls are sold every second, says Mattel.

Barbie hasn't been immune to the global economic downturn though as sales of the doll dropped 21 percent last quarter.

A popular memory game, from the board game makers Ravensburger is also celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Heinrich Hentelmann, Ravensburger's spokesman says that despite the global economic slowdown the German toy industry performed well in 2008.

Jigsaws featuring images of the new US President Barack Obama and Chancellor Merkel attracted attention from visitors, as did a traditional dolls house with a modern twist.

Ernst Kick is the toy fair's chief organiser.

He says that this year's trends include more environmentally friendly toys and virtual worlds will bring new gaming possibilities for children.

From night vision goggles, to spy on your cat, to remote controlled vehicles, Kick predicts that techies gifts are set to remain popular.

The event gives manufacturers a chance to showcase some of the latest toys before they hit the stores.

Approximately 2,676 exhibitors from 61 countries are presenting their new products to more than 80,000 trade visitors from 118 countries.

A select group of children were on hand to try out some of the toys and games.
