NZ animal welfare campaigner: Dogs not for human consumption

3News NZ

Tauranga animal welfare campaigner Elly Maynard will stop at nothing to get dogs off the menu in countries like Korea and the Philippines.

In 2001 she presented a petition to the UN, signed by more than four million people worldwide, asking that it classify dogs as not for human consumption.

She has just got back from undertaking a dog rescue in the Philippines.

Documentary makers Ingrid Leary and Peter Takapuna were there.

Ironically, Elly Maynard has made a strong case for legalizing dog meat, in order to greatly reduce the risk of children dying from eating contaminated meat and put an end to the criminality associated with the illegal trade. She sounds like someone who pushes for Prohibition and then is outraged about Al Capone and deaths from drinking Sterno.

When I was a teenager I ate from a hamburger place that unbeknown to me used stollen dogs and cats in their burgers ... EWWW ... they were closed down and sent to jail as its illegal in N.Z to do this, just as it is illegal in the phillapines. Thank you Elly and all those that work with you for puting your lives on the line and standing up for the innocent dogs, who many by the sounds of it were peoples loved pets. Could we possably have more info on how to be able to donate to this cause ...

All animals should be treated with dignity and respect. All countries should NOT cage hens and pigs, should NEVER eat cats and dogs and treat them cruelly. Please don't listen to the "David's" of this world who posted his comment here, there are mentally ill, "sociopaths" with anger management issues, who don't have it in them to feel compassion and sympathy for other living creatures, these people are usually uneducated, unwell and are the enemy of decent, caring people. Can everyone please stop buying animal cruelty products and help this amazing lady Elly, who deserves a Nobel prize for what she's doing, she's a living legend, and I am passing her video to everyone I know so she gets donations to keep up and expand her great work!

Thanks to Elly from the bottom of my heart. I am an animal welfare campaigner who will NEVER stop, kindness to animals is right! Anyone who doesn't care about kindness, should not breed!

Elly, I think you are an absolute legend. I feel very strongly that all animals should be treated humanely - whether they are for human consumption or not. Culture aside, it is nice to see someone stand up for what is right. Torturing stolen dogs for food is disgusting.

Elly you are amazing and someone to look up to as you stand up for the things you believe in. I cried watching your story on tv the other night and felt disgusted being a human being after watching what those human beings were doing to those dogs, living creatures. As for those Andrews' and Davids' of this world, get your head out of your backside as you obviously did not listen to the programme properly as they said it was illegal to eat dog meat in the Philippines and these dogs were not bred on purpose built farms, like a sheep or cattle farm they were stolen pets! Not to mention the chance of getting rabies and dying from it is just sickening.I do have an understanding of the different beliefs and practices of different cultures but the lack of respect that these dog traders showed just scares me. Keep up the good work Elly cause you rock!!!

The trite "They eat dog, we eat pork" argument is simply not applicable in this case, even by the laziest of self-excusers. Eating dogs is illegal in the Philippines, so how could helping them to enforce their OWN laws be viewed as interfering in their culture?

Get a grip! If you are too lazy to do anything yourself to improve the world we live in, at least have the grace not to belittle those that DO actually give a damn!

You are way out of line Elly Maynard. Your report is trying to send the wrong message. I hold you completely responsible for giving out a false pretense of this dogmeat-eating culture in the Philippines. Have you really tried living in the Philippines? If you ask the locals around the country whether they eat dog-meat, I bet a few of them would have tried it but none of them would say it's part of their daily diet... Your report is based on a few locals who are eating dog-meat in Baguio. Did you know that the Ifugao tribe, who comprises majority of the locals in Baguio, TRADITIONALLY eat meat?... I guess you didn't know that... And what's your right to force your rules in another country? What would you feel if Asians practice their culture and traditions here in New Zealand. I bet you would be up to your ass and feel your own Kiwi culture has been undermined... How straight and politically correct do you think you are? You're a racist and a fool for criticizing other people's culture. There's a word out there that most bigoted Kiwis disregard and it's called RESPECT.

We should be proud of someone making a stand for something they believe in. This is complete animal cruelty and should not be tolerated anywhere in the world. Some of these dogs are peoples pets that have been stolen and will be sold for food - that in itself is disgusting! Nice work Elly.
