Orewa's Rotary Club has once again proved to be a controversial venue for National's leader to hold a speech.

Known for Don Brash's race relations rant four years ago, tonight it was John Key's turn. However this time it was not for any policy announcement, but rather the fact that he apparently did not want the media there to cover it.

Earlier in the day, the club president had given permission for media to attend, but by 6pm things had changed and John Key was apparently not interested in having the press inside.

However, John Key disputed that and said that the media are always welcome.

Tonight was Mr Key's first visit to Orewa and 3 News understands that it will also be his last.
