Organisers of a Taranaki town pub crawl on bikes have not responded to a police call for talks.

The annual Hawera Push Bike Pub Crawl is this year scheduled for December 20, with hundreds expected to take part.

Cyclists on a variety of styles of bicycle pedal the 7km from Hawera to Normanby, taking in the seven pubs on the way, before returning.

Last week, police said posters had started appearing for the event and they were keen to talk to organisers about safety and the law.

However, Sergeant Robyn Burnett said the request appeared to have fallen on deaf ears.

"We are of course disappointed that the organisers have not taken us up on the chance to work together , but it doesn't change our own resolve to ensure the day runs smoothly and safely."

In past years, there had been incidents of assault and disorder, and numerous complaints from motorists held up by the event.

Ms Burnett said one of the greatest concerns was those taking part not wearing appropriate bike helmets.

"The cost of a helmet is a small price to pay for safety. The alternative hits the pocket a lot harder and puts the rider at risk of serious injury."

Riders without a helmet face an on-the-spot fine of $55.

The call for safety was not about the police being killjoys, Ms Burnett said.

"We acknowledge that the event has become quite iconic for Hawera and it's great that people want to travel far and wide to enjoy our town," she said.

"All we want to do is make sure that those who do come here stay safe and go home at the end of the day having had a really fun, incident-free experience."
