The Cancer Society is calling for the Government to follow Australia's lead in setting mandatory legislation for sun-bed salons.

New voluntary standards have just been set in New Zealand and many tanning salon owners are not even aware the standard exists.

The Cancer Society says the standard, if legally binding, would prevent people under 18 using the sun-beds - which it says are particularly dangerous for young people, increasing the risk of melanoma by 75 per cent.
