The care of thousands of preschoolers in New Zealand is uncertain, amid reports that child care operator ABC Learning Centres is on the brink of collapse.

The union representing early childhood workers, the New Zealand Educational Institute,  is seeking urgent talks with the Government about the situation.

The Australian-based company is the world's largest childcare operator.

Australian media are reporting today that the company may go into receivership as it faces large losses and the possible restatement of prior earnings.

Trading in its shares was halted when it failed to release its earnings report.
