The Corrections Department has come under attack for placing a teenage white supremacist in the same cell as a hardened Maori gang member.

The result was that the teenager was repeatedly raped.

Dean Noble remained defiant as he was sentenced for the raping and bashing the teen today.

Flanked by prison guards, he called out 'I'm innocent!' during the sentencing. He also had to be ordered to take off his hat.

The sentencing focussed on whether or not Noble should get New Zealand's toughest penalty - preventative detention.

Crown Prosecutor Pip Currie called for it, saying Noble had more than 60 convictions and was already in jail for assault and kidnapping when he attacked his cellmate at Christchurch prison.

Currie said: "(The attacks) included violence and there were threats made during the rapes. Indeed, during one of them the victim was rendered unconscious."

Noble claimed through his lawyer that the victim was a liar. The sentencing judge ignored that and said he had agonised over the appropriate sentence. Justice Chisholm told Noble to consider himself lucky for getting an 11 year sentence instead of preventative detention.

The raped teenager was himself in prison for assault, kidnapping, and sex with a minor, but prison activists say the pair should never have been in the same cell.

"We are totally opposed to any idea of putting a teenager in with a seasoned prisoner - that should never happen," says Kathy Dunstall of the Howard League for Prison Reform.

The Corrections Department says cell pair-ups are considered carefully. They also said that inmates are checked every two hours and have an intercom and buzzer if they need help.

"In the case of the prisoner Noble and the complainant there was absolutely no knowledge that the doubling up would be inappropriate," says Christchurch Prison Manager John Roper.

Noble will now be in jail until at least 2015, and this time he will be in a single cell.

You have no idea. He is one of the "worst" gang members in NZ but the is completely out of character. How many years has this person been in and out of prison for, and then all of a sudden he engages in a sexual act of this nature. People don't engage in this on a one off and if it was his nature it would have happened a long time before this instance. There is a lot about this case you and the rest of the public are not aware of. I have no doubt in my mind that Dean Noble would have assaulted this person at all. I imagine that he would have beaten this guy terribly, but sexual assault I don't believe at all. I am not pretending in anyway that I believe that Dean Noble is a "great" member of society but I don't believe that he truly did commit the crimes that Maxwell claims of him. Nobles have always claimed that "if your big enough to do the crime, your big enough to do the time" and for Dean to admit to some of the other serious crimes that he has committed but deny this one, furthers my belief of his innocence. There are many reasons why his sister would be incline to kill Nobles ex-partner, that again you and other people are not aware of. True these two should not have been put in a cell together, but we must also remember that Michael Maxwell was not a respectable, innocent member of society either, he was a White Skin Head who was in prison for assault, kidnapping and having sex with young children.

These are only the sex crimes he has been convicted of. I recall a 14 year old Noble with power of life and death over christchurch runaways, others have since made suicide attempts due to his attentions - early extreme offending that was in his mungy days where he received his basic devo training. Not giving him PD would mean NOONE qualifies based on his REAL form. One of the worst gang members in NZ and widely understood as such - by those in the know. As if his sister would even consider killing his missus without his say so - that puppet. Juries and Judges and prison clowns need to stop giving this "person" the benefit of the doubt. Bad to the bone. Just leaves me with one question this rogues life - what do you call an underaged rapist? A gang prospect may be the word I'm looking for. Where were CYPs when he began...

Treating people with violence and brutality does NOTHING to improve their behaviour.
There are some people in prison who really are 'bad', but most of them are are not. They might be young, impulsive, mentally ill, drug addicted, intellectually impaired, illiterate, or just plain foolish. But they do not 'benefit' in any way from being assaulted or abused.
We as a society must protect all those who are vulnerable, including those who are in prison. That is what distinguishes us from those nations which don't give a crap about human rights.
The Howard League has as much right to free speech as any other person or organisation in this country.
There is no 'silver bullet' in the law and order debate, and we need to stop pretending that there is one (eg 'death penaly', 'no parole' etc etc)

Are these people really that stupid?? Put a white supremest in with a Maori gang member is so asking for trouble and they don't see that??

If he wasn't raped, would the system kick up a stink about putting a white supremacist in with a maori. I think not. If people want to practice white supremacy piss off back too where it originated. If you don't want to be subjected too what happens behind bars, obey the law.
