An elderly cyclist has died a week after being found critically injured in Lower Hutt and police have charged a man with assault in relation to the incident.

Police said William Campbell McEwen, 76, from Lower Hutt, was found after he fell from his bike soon after 8pm on December 12.

Police said he had encountered a group of youths outside Motomart on Rutherford St where he was found.

Detective Inspector Shane Cotter said police were still investigating exactly what happened , and were getting a clearer picture having spoken with witnesses, but urged more people to come forward.

Mr McEwen was wearing a white bicycle helmet and riding an old style brown mountain bike with red mudguards.

Bystanders stopped to assist him at the time.

The arrest was made on Wednesday night and the man will face an assault charge in Lower Hutt District Court on Tuesday.

Mr McEwen had spent the last week in Hutt Hospital and died last night.
