Two barbaric attacks on pet goats over the weekend has the SPCA warning of an increase in serious animal abuse.

The goat attacks happened in rural Franklin, South of Auckland, and police are close to making an arrest.

Down in Hawke’s Bay another grim discovery this morning – a dead dog washed up close to a local surf club.

The SPCA says it has no idea why cruelty is on the rise but warns it will prosecute.

Raylene Whiteside, the goat’s owner, was incensed by the people who killed her goat.

“I think they are sick, cruel, sadistic cowards,” she says.

Bubble and Squeak, bought nine years ago, were much loved family pets.

Bubble is alive today but Squeak was tethered to the towbar of a car and forced to run behind it. When she could run no longer she was dragged for several kilometres behind the vehicle.

Some of the photos of Squeak’s remains are so disturbing that we have not been able to publish them.

There was another similar attack on a goat in the same night – Animal Welfare is appalled.

“I mean, I don’t know. I’d just like to know what is going through their minds. Why do they do that to an innocent animal that was minding its own business,” says an Animal Welfare representative.

These two cases are representative of a recent spike in animal abuse. A Hawke’s Bay dog, “Star”, was lucky to survive being dragged 50 metres by a four-wheel drive.

However, she still had to have her back feet amputated.

The SPCA’s David Lloyd Barker says jail is the only place for people who do this.

“I hope it doesn’t get to epidemic proportions – I really do. I hope we can basically show people that if they do these things they will be in front of a judge. They will be in front of a court and hopefully they will be put behind bars,” he says.

Police say they are close to catching those responsible for the two goat killings. If convicted, it is likely they would be sent to prison.

Goats are amazing animals and are so clever I cant believe a human can do this! I could go on and on. PLEASE PLEASE CATCH THE EVIL MONSTERS THAT DID THIS!! AND DRAG THEM TO THERE DEATH!!!!!!!

I cannot comprehend the sick deranged minds of these mongrels, they should be chained up by their testicles and shot. My thoughts go out to Raylene, and the other poor little goat that is pining for his sister. I hope Bubble comes back to haunt these mongrels for the rest of their pathetic exsistance!!

I always change channels when "hunting" shows air, it makes decent; caring people sick. There should be very stiff penalies for those who are cruel to animals, because these types are sick, and don't feel compassion, or sympathy like the rest of us. Murder and violence towards humans is next for these ferral underclasses, therefore LOCK THEM UP, and throw away the key! Also, goats and dogs should not be tied up, this leaves them nowhere to go if there is danger, and is cruel. Goats shouldn't be used as lawn mowers, tied up on the side of the road, this isn't what they are for, and they can't escape mad, bad and evil people who are driving buy. I'm a vegetarian, and I do a lot for anilmal welfare, everyone needs to do their bit.

Roger, I agree that they consider themselves
"macho" but "sods" as you express it is a more correct term. Rodeos are another abuse of animals.

The TV media may need to take on more responsibility towards showing such violence as it's proven that those who have such tendencies do become violent after viewing violence. Then, of course, we will have to censor the internet, magazines (throw out hunting ones) and uh, computer games and uh, it becomes obvious that we are out of control....

Reminds me a little of ancient Rome when the people gave up democracy aka their freedom, in exchange for comparative safety. Is that how we'll end up?

Anyway, there will always be good, kind people but the concern is that violence and lack of empathy is on the increase. Time to curtail that.

Sick people, mabie a of pain in there own lives would make them rethink hurting defencless animals. This is a warning that these people are ready to find a human target.

"S" its true the hunting programmes on TV are a factor in this, i absolutely loath those macho sods.
There is also the problem of our youth not having meaningful work or any at all (idle hands), and lets not forget the way the world is with radical islamic groups beheading people for the world to see,,,its all relevant, these youths that do horrendous acts to animals would think nothing of doing the same to a human.

These ratbags should be dealt with severely and face the same punishment as they administered to the poor animal,,well thats what i`d like to do with them.

This is so distressing. Poor little female goat to have suffered like that so undeservedly. Poor brother left behind calling for her.

TV3, you ask why there is increasing cruelty to animals. One reason is the huge increase in hunting shows and hunting magazines. These encourage disrespect towards animals and it's a short step from there to cruelty. Even "Coastwatch" on TVNZ showed total disrespect for a killed deer this week. How can we expect anything BUT increased cruelty if increased disrespect towards animals is accepted on television?

This and other cruelty recently has made me so upset and I am frustrated with a justice system which does not reflect the way this kind of cruelty shatters the caring people of New Zealand.
