A highly toxic insecticide which is already banned in over 50 countries has finally been pulled from use in New Zealand.

Environmental Risk Management Authority announced today it had revoked approvals for the insecticide endosulfan and prohibited its importation, manufacture and use here.

The chemical has already been banned in 55 countries.

Erma says the ban would come into effect on January 16 - with specified requirements for the pesticide's disposal within 12 months.
