Four decades ago Danish gold and silversmith Jens Hansen set up a nelson workshop.

Now nine years after his death his sons are continuing the legacy.

“I’d like to think he'd be proud that we're keeping it going,” says Halfdan Hansen. “We've got apprentices working for us now so we're keeping it alive for the future.”

To celebrate the 40th anniversary a collection of designs - which have not been made or sold since Jens Hansen originally designed them - has been re-launched.

Much of collection has been jeweller Heath Neilson's responsibility.

“They’re still quite a classic old piece and it's quite nice to get back to a bit of the old days,” says Mr Neilson.

The designs date back to the 1960s and 1970s and each has an original hand drawn blueprint to follow.

“It’s good... it's like looking through his eyes almost,” continues Mr Neilson.

Jens Hansen's work has been described as sculptural and modern, but the secret of its longevity is its ability to be timeless.

“We have lots of people come in and say well I bought this piece off your dad 40 years ago and I want my daughter to have it or my grand daughter to have it,” explains Halfdan Hansen.

For the Hansen clan it is about knowing when you are onto a good thing and not getting caught up in the fickle world of fashion.

“Buying classic pieces, whether they're traditional or whether they're contemporary and modern... as long as they stand the test of time they can look fashionable but be fashion proof,” states Halfdan.

In 1999 Jens signed on to design the lord of the rings "One Ring".

It was a commission which made the critically renowned jeweller find popular acclaim too.

While the one ring still draws in Lord of the Rings fans, around here it is the ring's design which makes it a celebrity.
