In a stake out that lasted only a few hours, both pedestrians and vehicles were picked up illegally using the Mount Victoria bus tunnel.
Kent Duston is one person who took photos just hours after a 42-year-old man was seriously injured in a hit and run.
“What we tend to see is vans and four wheel drives,” says Mt Victoria resident Kent Duston. “Those commercial vehicles during the day, then the boy racers at night.”
That mixture, combined with buses, is causing serious concern.
The Resident's Association says it is only a matter of time before someone is killed.
“You see them come up the hill at very high speed, some of them will even switch off their lights before going through the tunnel and then you hear them accelerating all the way through the tunnel which has a 30km speed limit,” explains Mr Duston. “Some of them must be breaking it by a factor of three or four.”
The tunnel represents the latest flashpoint in the capital's fight against boy racers.
Pictures taken over the weekend show a modified car being forced to reverse out by a bus.
The city council says all safety suggestions made by the Residents Association are being considered.
“The first one is we are going to put the speed bumps back in which were recently removed during the resealing,” states Andy Ford of the Wellington City Council. “The second thing we are going to do is look at whether barrier arms during night would be a good idea.”
Police are yet to speak with the 42-year-old hit and run victim who is still in intensive care at Wellington hospital.
However, they did tell 3 News they have no witnesses or leads and are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.
