The 49th Parliament opened this morning, with tax cuts and the recession among the issues discussed during the session.

Among those speaking today was new National Maungakiekie MP Peseta Sam Lotu-Liga.

In his maiden speech, Mr Lotu-Liga discussed his upbringing and the struggle his family faced to succeed in New Zealand.

"I was taught at a young age that education was a key to a successful future for not just me, but my wider family," he said. "And I am grateful to my parents who sacrificed and saved in order for my siblings and I to attend reputable state schools and universities."

He will be a great icon to look up to for many polynesians and pacific islanders living his exact past, but now with a brave future to pursue and embrace.
