The headlines screamed that Manurewa was a killing zone after the gunning down of liquor store owner Navtej Singh. That was less than six months ago, but now there are signs community pride is reemerging with a children's party in the park behind Mr Singh's store.

But feelings are still raw.

It was a chance for Riverton locals to behave like real neighbours again with a party and the opportunity to make a wish.

Ten-year-old Craig Tubby has brought along his family.

"I think it's good because everyone's coming together and helping the community," says Craig.

The children's party was the brainchild of Housing New Zealand.

"We're focusing today on the children 'cause we know when we bring children together at play, then the adults come along as well," says Housing NZ's John Coffey. "This is all part of the first step of community building, and we're very supportive of that."

In June, the murder of Mr Singh shocked the country. His father provided the power today and cables come from Mr Singh's store for the community to reenergise itself.

"I'm happy to have a party over there and it should be good," he says. "All the communities can come together and teach their children good manners and respect."

And now people are beginning to talk again.

The Riverton Reserve itself had been off limits to some families.

There is a long way to go, but Housing New Zealand hopes leaders will emerge from the experience of throwing the party to help make their children's wishes come true.
