The Rip Curl GromSearch has concluded and the country's best young surfers have been unearthed.

The under-16 stars were not just riding for national titles at Piha - they were also hoping to catch the eye of the world champ selectors.

Gisborne's Johnny Hicks made the most of the one-metre swell, recording near-perfect scores to win the overall title just ahead of Tauranga's Alex Dive.

It was Hicks' last event before stepping up to the under-18 division.

In the girls' division, Raglan's Alexis Poulter continued her domination of the under-16s, claiming her fourth straight win of the series.

But for the groms it is not just about finishing off the season in winning form - with spots in the world championaships team up for grabs, everyone is out to impress selectors.

There were some fierce rivalries in the younger divisions, Elliot Paerata-Reid just edging out his best friend Dune Kennings in the under-12s and winning the battle for the best young surfer of the day.
